Have you tried completing the exercises on the newest version of Kali? Most software you are going to need should be pre-installed. First we will have to download the VM at Stupor and Consternation Extract the archive 7z x pwk-kali-vm.7z and see the mess: Conversion time (split VMDK to single raw) I assume you already have VirtualBox installed and that you have not VMWare Workstation installed. I will prepare the suggested official box (without upgrading it) just to test the exploits (if I am going to write some). Unfortunately I am not familiar with writing buffer overflow exploits, so I am not sure how this will affect my overall experience. Installing and configuring most tools for the lab on any Debian-based OS you are familiar with should be easier than finding workarounds on a broken and outdated system. My PWK starts on Sunday and since I have booked only 30 lab days, I wanted to be prepared to start right away. A non upgradable VM you can’t install additional (up to date) software on, is the worst setup for a 24h exam I can imagine. I will just stick to the current Kali version since they are running pretty stable in Fusion. It is a self-paced online course designed to teach you penetration testing methodologies and the use of the tools and exploits included within Kali Linux. Honestly I thought that it might be a hidden first test for your motivation and to get you in the mood of desperation. Penetration Testing with Kali Linux (PWK) is a foundational ethical hacking course at Offensive Security (OffSec).
